Holiday Mobile

Mobiles are, traditionally, hung above the cribs of babies to both comfort them and give them something to look at. Toddlers can also benefit from the presence of a mobile, as can their room's decor. Through this fun activity for kids, your toddler can help create a mobile that is perfect for their personal space!

Craft Activity Instructions

Choose a theme for the mobile. If you are trying to match an already decorated bedroom, it is best to stick with the same colors. If not, let your little one help you pick out the colors and shapes they want on their mobile. Virtually any color and shape will do, and choosing a theme with several different shapes is a great way to go! For example, a room with a jungle theme may have a mobile in bright colors, green in particular, that has the shapes of different animals. Before assembling the mobile, cut out the shapes that your toddler wants to use.

You may consider laminating or decoupaging these shapes to improve their sturdiness. Have your little one help you use a hole punch to make a hole near the top of each shape. If the shape is long, it may require multiple punches to hang straight.

Have your toddler pick out the order of the shapes, choosing which should be next to one another. Tie pieces of string of varying lengths to the holes in the shapes. Next, tie two dowels together, perpendicularly, with a long piece of string.

Attach the strings connected to the shapes to the dowels, ensuring that each shape hangs at a different level. Screw a plant hook into the ceiling and tie a loop in the string that is holding the dowels together. Slip the loop over the plant hook to hang the mobile.
