Goal Setting for a Child

Goal Setting for a Child

Print this chart

Setting goals for your child is a great way to motivate and teach responsibility. You can work together with your child to set the goals in order that they feel they are part of the process. This can lead to better outcomes when they know they are part of the process. Discuss the importance of having both small and large goals throughout their life. Work together to ensure the goals are obtainable and talk about unrealistic goals. Parents can use this chart to mark chores including making their bed, practicing the piano, taking out the trash, brushing their teeth, or emptying the dishwasher. You can also use the goal setting chart for goals including doing well on their report card, making their school's sports team, or participating in a class play. You can break the larger goals into smaller steps such as handing in an assignment, completing a project, or doing well on an exam. Points can be assigned when a child completes their assigned tasks. Use the thermometer on the right side of the goal chart to track progress and highlight children's achievements. Your child's goal chart can be set up to use throughout the day, week, or month.
